针对此事，立陶宛奥委会在当地时间11月23日发布声明，表示拒绝抵制北京冬奥会。
Answering to the call, the Lithuanian National Olympic Committee (LTOK) circulated a statement on Tuesday, November 23, ruling out a boycott.
该声明称：“奥运会是全世界、全体奥林匹克运动的盛会，不是主办国的盛会。”声明指出国际奥委会坚持政治中立。此外，立陶宛奥委会认为，各国奥委会都有义务参加奥运会，否则将有受到国际奥委会制裁的风险。
"The Olympic Games are an event of the entire world, an entire Olympic movement, not the host country," it said, noting that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) abides by the principle of political neutrality. Moreover, the LTOK argues, every national Olympic committee is obliged to take part in the games, risking sanctions from the IOC.
立陶宛奥委会还从运动员的角度特别强调：“运动员的职业生涯短暂，为了奥运会，他们准备了一年以上或四年的时间，以政治原因要求他们不参加奥运会，是不公平的。”
"An athlete's career is a short one, while Olympic games are the most important event they are preparing for longer than a year or four years. We therefore do not think it would be fair to ask athletes to give up this opportunity for political reasons," the LTOK argued.
此前，据英国《泰晤士报》报道，英国正与其他“五眼联盟”成员国讨论是否跟随美国外交抵制北京冬奥会。尽管美国奥委会已经公开表示，任何抵制奥运会的行动，都会对运动员的积极性以及竞技状态产生极为重大的负面影响。
对此，外交部发言人赵立坚回应称，中方多次强调，北京冬奥会是世界各国冬奥运动员的舞台，他们才是主角。中方坚信在奥林匹克精神的指引下，在各方共同努力下，我们一定能为世界呈现一届简约安全、精彩的奥运盛会，共同推动国际体育事业的健康发展。中方一贯坚决反对任何将体育运动政治化和违背奥林匹克宪章精神的言行，有关炒作只会损害各国运动员的利益。
"Frankly, I think that is a hollow gesture.
"We sort of see sport as a competitor here.
"It's not - it's a collaborator…"
体育运动不应被政治化是国际社会的共同认知。美欧一些人士试图借人权议题给北京冬奥会贴上政治标签，并作为自身的政治工具，已严重违背了国际奥林匹克精神。
个别西方政客以一已私利为出发点，煽动抵制北京冬奥会，从短期看，对本国运动员的职业生涯造成了伤害；从长远看，是以伤害自身公信力甚至国际信誉为代价的，必然会引起国际社会多数成员的反感和反对。
